Tolkkinen High-Temperature Heat Pump Plant
A MODULAR INDUSTRIAL HEAT PUMP PLANT BASED ON A HIGH-EFFICIENCY TWO-STAGE COMPRESSION
Porvoon Energia Oy is a regional energy utility company responsible for the production and distribution of district heating and power in the city of Porvoo, Finland.
The core of Porvoon’s district heating system is the Tolkkinen CHP power plant, located at Tolkkisten Satamatie.
WHAT DID PORVOON ENERGIA NEED?
Porvoon Energia planned the integration of an industrial-scale heat pump plant within the existing site.
The challenge was therefore not only thermodynamic. It required high efficiency, industrial robustness, regulatory compliance under Finnish standards,

The most important achievement of this project:
- Recovered waste heat from the district heating network, transforming unused thermal energy into valuable heat for the system.
- Delivered a high-efficiency industrial heat pump solution specifically designed for high-temperature district heating applications.
- Integrated the new plant seamlessly into an existing CHP facility, enabling fully automated and remote operation.
- Reduced installation time and on-site risks through a modular, factory-tested skid design.
- Designed for long-term sustainability and reliability, combining high performance with a low environmental impact.
